Understanding Your Family Roots

It took me sometime to realize how important it was for a person to truly understand their background and family history. I never focused on it because I was born and raised in America and sort of became assimilated with the culture here. It wasn't until the later part of my 20s that I became thirsty for a greater understanding of my family's background. I wanted to know where my parents were truly from, to see where they came from. I grew up always hearing stories about my father and his small village in India called Didgi, but never had seen it.

Last year, for the first time in my life, I went on the most incredible journey to my motherland. It was more than a visit, really a dream trip. For me, it was learning where my parents came from, understanding why they are the way they are, why they always stress education and stable finances, and why they are so family oriented. If my Dad never came to America, I probably would have still been in India, well who knows. Knowing me, I would have made my way from Hyderabad to Bombay :))

Anyway, point of my story today is that it's so important to understand where your family came from, what your parents story is, because it's a part of you who are. We can only have bright and full futures when we embrace ourselves as a whole.

  1. We can't choose where we come from but we can choose where we are going!

I can understand how this trip was more than just an eye opener for you, not just a culture shock (which is for MANY people) but it is nice to see people appreciating their backgrounds and roots.

Seeing extended family members you never knew, learning about the parts they played in your parents lives and even seeing where it all started. The history, the culture and the people, more of a spiritual journey of self discovery than one of seeing your own history.

It is a great accomplishment. Well done :)
